AMC Theatres reopening with new cleaning and safety precautions

CEO & President of AMC Theatres, Adam Aron, talks about the differences you can expect to see when you return to theatres.

If you’ve missed going to the movies, the wait is finally over! AMC just announced many AMC theatres are reopening across the country on or near August 20 with a slew of new cleaning and safety precautions.

Birmingham area AMC theaters will be reopening on Thursday, August 20.

AMC said the following in a statement:

AMC is delighted to announce that movies are coming back to the big screen at select AMC theatres in your area beginning Thursday, August 20. To celebrate the return of movies in your area, and to celebrate AMC’s 100th anniversary, on re-opening day, August 20, guests at the locations below can enjoy the magic of the movies at AMC for 1920 prices: just $0.15 (plus sales tax).

In the first part of our phased reopening plan, the following theatres in the Birmingham market are reopening to movie-goers starting Thursday, August 20:

AMC Theatres reopening

Safety and Health Policies

The next time you visit one of the two AMC theatres in our area you’ll notice a lot of new procedures designed to reduce touchpoints and protect your safety, including simplified menus for shorter lines at concessions and reduced auditorium capacities for social distancing.

Masks Required for All

Masks are required for guests and crew throughout the theatre. The mask must cover your nose and mouth and fit snugly around your face and chin. Neck gaiters, open-chin bandanas and masks with vents or exhalation valves are not acceptable. Masks will also be available for purchase for $1.

Food and Drink in the Auditorium

Masks are still required in the auditorium but may be removed while enjoying food and drinks. AMC asks that you protect yourself and others by wearing a mask before, during and after your movie.

Social Distancing Standards

Directional signs and reminders will be posted throughout the theatre to help guests remember to maintain distance before, during and after the movie.

Reduced Auditorium Capacities

All auditoriums will be at 30% capacity or less. In auditoriums with traditional seating, every other row is blocked off for your safety. In auditoriums with wide AMC Signature Recliners, there is already enough space between rows to allow for social distancing. In all auditoriums AMC aks that you leave an empty seat between yourself and other guests. AMC says that once you’re in the auditorium, if you are uncomfortable in your reserved seat, feel free to move to another socially distant seat after the movie starts, or see an associate for assistance or a refund.

Thoroughly Enhanced Cleaning Procedures

AMC have stepped up cleaning procedures throughout the theatre and added extra time between movies so that employees can take extra care in disinfecting the auditorium before your show. Cleaning crews will utilize new cutting-edge electrostatic disinfectant sprayers that maximize surface coverage by using negatively charged ions to that the disinfectant particles wrap around and cling to positively charged surfaces. Every night, carpets will be vacuumed with vacuums using HEPA filters proven to trap 99.97% of airborne particles. The HVAC systems have been upgraded with MERV 13 filters for superior air quality. Plus, throughout the day all common areas and high touch points will be routinely cleaned and sanitized. Hard surfaces, including doors, handrails, recliner buttons, and tray tables will be disinfected before each showtime.

What about Concessions?

AMC have temporarily simplified their concession selections for shorter lines and quicker service.  Classic movie treats like AMC Perfectly Popcorn, Coca-Cola Freestyle, hot dogs, candy, MovieNachos, AMC KidsPacks and more are available for now with expansion to the menu coming soon. Cash is not accepted at concessions or MacGuffins Bar in order to avoid shared contact between cash and food handling. When you check out at concessions, don’t forget to ask your cashier for everything you need! To reduce touch points, napkins, lids, straws and condiments like ketchup, mustard, relish, buttery popcorn topping and salt are now available by request. To minimize contact, AMC Perfectly Popcorn and Coca-Cola Freestyle drink refills are unavailable at this time.

Daily Associate Health Screenings

Managers and crew members have their temperatures read before starting their shifts. Anyone who has a fever or symptoms is required to self-quarantine until symptom free for at least 72 hours. Managers and crew members are required to routinely wash their hands for at least 20 seconds.

AMC obviously asks that if you have symptoms such as fever or cough, or have come in contact with someone with symptoms, please take care and come back to see a movie when you are well.

The New Mutants

In this terrifying, action-fueled film based on the MARVEL comic series, five young people who demonstrate special powers are brought to a secret institution to undergo treatments they are told will cure them of the dangers of their powers. Included are Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage (Blu Hunt), who creates illusions from other people’s fears; Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), who transforms into the werewolf Wolfsbane; Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton), who, as Cannonball, can fly at jet speeds protected by a force field; Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot (Henry Zaga), who absorbs and channels solar power; and Illyana Rasputin aka Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy). The younger sister of Colossus, Magik becomes encased in armor at will and wields a soulsword that amplifies her multiple superhuman and psychic abilities. Invited by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) to share their stories about when their powers first manifested, the five patients come to understand that they are in a class of people called mutants, who have historically been marginalized and feared. As they relive their origin stories, their memories seem to turn into terrifying realities. Soon, they question what is real and what isn’t, and it becomes clear that the institution isn’t what it seems. Now the question is why are they being held captive? And who is trying to destroy them? The tension and horror mount in this white-knuckle thrill ride directed by Josh Boone and co-written by Boone and Knate Lee.
