About National Doughnut Day
National Doughnut Day was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army. It was used to commemorate the Donut Lassies and raise much-needed funds during the Great Depression. Since then, National Doughnut Day is traditionally celebrated on the first Friday in June.
In 1917, Salvation Army female volunteers known as “donut lassies” prepared thousands of fresh donuts for the homesick soldiers that served in France during World War I. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near the front lines, two Salvation Army volunteers came up with the idea of providing donuts. They are reported to have been an “instant hit” and were soon serving in excess of 300 donuts and 700 cups of coffee per day. This year marks 100 years since the “donut lassies” first served donuts to our military. The Salvation Army Donut Lassies are often credited with popularizing the sweet treat in the United States when the troops returned home from war.
