Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is opening its first Alabama location at Pepper Place in Birmingham.
Founder and owner Jeni Britton Bauer is a James Beard Award-winning chef so it’s no doubt you’re in for a delicious treat.
To celebrate joining the district’s creative, exciting community, Jeni’s created a limited-edition flavor, Praline Pecans.
Although Pepper Place is known for being a leader in urban adaptive reuse, the 610-square-foot, jewel-box designed scoop shop is the first ground up building within the Pepper Place District in over 10 years. This new addition to the neighborhood complements the district’s history while reflecting the creative spirit of the community.
“We’re super excited to finally be scooping in Birmingham—even though the shop opened on time, it feels like it’s been a long spring, you know? We love the city so much and have been dreaming of opening here for years. Come see us at Pepper Place soon!,” said Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Founder, Jeni Britton Bauer.
Choosing Pepper Place as the Alabama location is a nod to Columbus, Ohio’s North Market where Jeni got her start by buying fresh ingredients at the farmers market every Saturday. Jeni’s has a long history in Birmingham, starting with V. Richards grocery store and is currently available at area Publix and Fresh Market locations.
Pepper Place has been creating a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood along its pedestrian spine for decades, and the Jeni’s pavilion was designed intentionally to invite diners to grab a scoop and explore the walkable entertainment district.
“Jeni’s anchors a primary entrance into the district and the pavilion design is intended to activate a corner once held by a parking lot,” says Callan Childs, Director of Design and Development for Sloss Real Estate. “The new structure strengthens the pedestrian experience along 29th Street, and Jeni’s is the perfect retail partner to energize the covered outdoor gathering space.”
The innovative ice cream brand, devoted to bringing people together, is now open and implementing the following safety measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and prioritize the health and well-being of guests and team members:
- Floor stickers for socially-distanced spacing
- A Plexiglas point of sale shield and dippy shield
- Contactless service, including masks recommended to enter, no flavor sampling, no cash payments and all cones served upside down in a bowl.
