The first Mile End Deli opened in Brooklyn in 2010 with a mission of sharing classic Jewish comfort food from the owner’s childhood and introducing new type of cuisine. Mile End Deli then opened a Manhattan outpost before heading South to open an outpost in Nashville, Tennessee and now a brand new location right here in downtown Birmingham at 1701 1st Ave. S, Suite 135!
Mile End Deli in the Magic City!
Using their grandmothers’ time-honored recipes as the foundation for the menu, the folks at Mile End Deli put updated spins on traditional dishes and put a focus on fresh ingredients and from-scratch cooking techniques. The restaurant is a combination of a Jewish delicatessen and a Canadian-style restaurant, modeled after delis found in Montreal’s famous Mile End neighborhood. This specific style of deli offers signature smoked meats and sandwiches, homemade hotdogs with tangy kraut, poutine, fresh whitefish salad and more.
Co-founder Joel Tietolman got started in NYC’s food scene by schlepping bagels to the city from Montreal’s famed Saint-Viateur Bagel Shop once a week. It was his childhood in Montreal and his strong connection, respect and love for Jewish food that inspired him to open Mile End.
In 2018, Tietolman tapped Birmingham-based chef Adam Grusin to manage day-to-day food operations of the restaurant, oversee menu development and expand the restaurant to the South. Grusin had always dreamed to open a restaurant that would put the focus on preparation and cuisine heavily influenced by the old Jewish-American delis and found a fit with the family-focused and tradition-heavy philosophy of Mile End.
