New Birmingham mural is Instagram-worthy

Sozo Trading Co., in collaboration with Blank Space Bham, has completed a new community art mural located on 1st Avenue South & 41st Street in Avondale on the exterior wall of Sozo Trading Co.’s upscale thrift store.

Created by artists Meghan McCollum, Levi Levinson, Jordan Thompson and Lydia Walker of Blank Space Bham, the mural brings life to the static white panel walls with a vibrant indigo print pattern accented with white flowers and the inspirational quote, “What you do matters,” chosen by polling the local Birmingham community.

“I was first drawn to the use of Malian bogolan (or mud cloth) as inspiration for the mural because of the intentionality and purpose behind the patterned designs. The flowers around the central text box are meant to represent life and beauty. We see the vibrancy of Avondale and acknowledge the balance of strength and fragility it embodies as the neighborhood revitalizes, but also fights to retain its accessibility and character,” says Meghan McCollum, Founder and Executive Director of Blank Space Bham.

“We are so excited to have the first in a series of murals painted outside of Sozo Trading Co. Our quote, “What you do matters,” is a reminder to be the best we can be and remember what we do really matters. Even in the small things, our world around us can become a better place,” says Suzanne Owens, Chief Executive Officer of Sozo Children.

More Murals in the Works

Sozo Trading Co. plans to have four additional murals painted along the exterior wall that runs parallel to the railroad tracks on First Avenue South over the next couple of years. The hope is this first in a series of murals will inspire individuals while motivating local community partners to financially sponsor future mural projects with similar messages along the Sozo Trading Co. building in Avondale.

“Painting this piece has been a truly transformative experience. So many members of the community have stopped to talk about their beloved neighborhood and about their aspirations for Birmingham. We’ve gotten to share in visions and dreams for our community. We can each take a step towards change. We can create what we deserve. What we do matters!”, said McCollum.
