Meet your new favorite appetizer, Pepperoni Tequeños

Move over pigs in a blanket, there is a new party appetizer champion in town, Pepperoni Tequeños! Learn how you can serve them up at your next gathering.

Tequeños originate in Venezuela, they are great as afternoon snacks, bar food, and as petite appetizers at parties. It’s an easy recipe with a pizza profile because it has pepperoni. Just wrap everything in an egg roll wrapper and you’ve got Pepperoni Tequeños!

What you need for Pepperoni Tequeños

  • Egg roll wrappers (12)
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3.5-oz package pepperoni slices
  • 12-oz package mozzarella cheese sticks
  • Vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 Tbsp chopped fresh basil
  • Crushed red pepper flakes

Preparation and Cooking

Brush the egg roll wrappers with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with a little of the Parmesan cheese.

Place 4 pieces of pepperoni in the center of each wrapper on the diagonal; tops with a mozzarella cheese stick.

Fold the outer corners of the wrapper over the ends of the cheese stick; fold one side of the remaining egg roll wrapper to the center over the cheese stick.

Roll to the opposite side & press the corner tightly to seal.

Pour the oil to a depth of 1 1/2 inches in a 3 1/2-quart saucepan & heat to 350 degrees.

Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan to monitor the temperature.

Fry the tequeños, in batches, 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown. Allow the temperature to return to 350 degrees between batches.

Let stand on a wire rack over paper towels. Stir together the marinara sauce & the basil. Garnish, if desired.
