We head to the Woolworth to talk about all the St. Patrick's Day festivities going on in Five Points South!
The Five Points Alliance is pleased to announce the dates and event schedule for the Five Points South St. Patrick’s Celebration, Birmingham’s premier and most historic celebration of the Irish holiday. Five Points South will celebrate all things Irish with week-long Irish food and drink specials from Five Points South restaurants and bars, as well as events such as an Irish Flag raising, Irish toast, dinner, and more.
Five Points South is now Birmingham’s newest entertainment district, as approved by the Birmingham City Council in December 2019. This new designation permits open containers of alcohol in the neighborhood on authorized nights and weekends within the district boundaries and provides flexibility for special events such as St. Patrick’s Day.
Under Alabama state law, businesses with a liquor license and located within the designated boundaries of the Five Points Entertainment District will now be allowed to provide customers with paper cups with which they can carry their purchased alcoholic beverages out of the business to be consumed off-premises.
Events are scheduled for March 12, 13, 14 and 17:
Fifth Annual Irish Flag Raising & The Great Birmingham Irish Toast
Thursday, March 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The celebration will kick off Thursday, March 12 at the flagpole located at Chick-fil-A in Five Points South, as an Irish Flag is raised. The Birmingham Irish Cultural Society will lead the ceremony, which will include pipe and drum performances and an Irish blessing. The ceremony also serves as the commencement of the St. Patrick’s celebration and the entertainment district designation announcement. Following the ceremony, Brennan’s Irish Pub will host Birmingham’s largest St. Patrick’s toast, complete with Guinness beer and Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey. Guinness and Tullamore Dew drink specials will be available. Those celebrating by purchasing a Guinness pint can have their pint glass etched that evening.
40th Annual St. Patrick’s Dinner presented by the Birmingham Irish Cultural Society
Friday, March 13 from 7 to 10 p.m.
The Birmingham Irish Cultural Society will host the 40th Annual St. Patrick’s Dinner on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at Inverness Country Club. Guests will have an immersive experience through traditional Irish food, dancing, music and more. Tickets are available for $75 per person and $600 for a table of eight. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Kid One Transport.
(POSTPONED) 36th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade
The Five Points Alliance has POSTPONED the Five Points South 36th Annual St. Patrick’s Parade as a safety precaution in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, following the direction of Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and the recommendation from the Jefferson County Health Department.
A press conference held by the Jefferson County Department of Health on Thursday, March 12 asked community members to limit large gatherings as a safety precaution. The parade typically attracts thousands of people, which would make impossible the “social distancing” practices recommended by the CDC to prevent rapid spread of the virus.
