The Poke Salat Festival returns to Arab Alabama this weekend

If you love poke salat or you’re just plain curious about what in the world it is, then hit the road to North Alabama. Downtown Arab is hosting the 35th annual Poke Salat Festival

Pole Salat Festival

May 17 from 2pm – 9pm and May 18 from 10am – 8pm

Historic Downtown Arab Alabama

The event is free and family friendly and it centers around pokeweed, the young shoots of the plant are used to make poke salat.

Yes, it is safe to eat, but you have to boil it. Once you pick it, you have to peel the leaves off of it, put in boiling water for 5 minutes, then pour off the water, and repeat this 2 or 3 times. After the last boiling most people squeeze excess water from the leaves, then they pour a little oil in the skillet, put the poke salad in the hot oil, then add eggs and salt and pepper to taste.

Besides poke salat, the event will also have multiple vendors, entertainment, a children’s play area, a pet parade, and a Bluegrass Band Competition.
