The Preservery brings ‘elevated soul food’ to Birmingham’s Five Points South

Chef Andrea Foster is bringing elevated soul food and extra culinary personality to Five Points South this month as she opens her new restaurant ‘The Preservery’ located at 2005 11th Avenue South in Birmingham’s Five Points South.

“I want to welcome everyone to The Preservery at Five Points South,” said Foster. “Food is the great equalizer. I want this place to unite people over a common plate of food. I want my guests to realize we are not so different after all – that we are all family.”

The Preservery opened its new location to the public on Sunday, July 21, serving brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Preservery serves lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Chef Foster and the Five Points Alliance hosted a ceremonial ribbon at the space on Thursday, July 25.

Foster injects international flavors into nostalgic Southern favorites to create a memorable menu. Foster uses fresh, local ingredients to prepare her “fancy comfort food” bursting with creativity – like Jambalaya Fried Rice and Turnip Green Wontons with Sweet Thai Cherry Pie Sauce. The bar will feature Prohibition-era cocktails.

How It All Started

After growing up cooking with her father, Foster began pursuing her entrepreneurial dreams by enrolling in Create Birmingham’s CO.STARTERS business development program, then competed in 2017 as a finalist in REV Birmingham’s business-pitching competition, The Big Pitch presented by PNC. In February 2018, Foster started a six-month stint running her restaurant in REV’s REVeal Kitchen accelerator space in The Pizitz Food Hall. Since then, she continued developing and testing her concept through catering opportunities, markets, festivals and pop-up events, as she searched for a permanent home for The Preservery.

“Since we started working with Chef Dre in 2017, we have been looking forward to the day that she opened the doors of her own brick-and-mortar space,” said David Fleming, President and CEO of REV Birmingham. “From the Big Pitch to REVeal Kitchen, Dre proved over and over that she had what it takes – and our whole team is delighted to see her realize her dream for The Preservery.”
